So you're ready to head to the gym, your favorite songs are qued, and by the time you get there, you want to get right into your routine. What if you didn't know where to start or what to do exactly? First-timers and those who haven't been back in a while may feel the pressure of not knowing what to do and I'm here to make it less complicated than it should be.

gym preparation

  1. Come Prepared: No you don't need to know everything but focusing on a particular workout plan for the day is one step in the right direction. Have one drawn up and picked out before starting.

  2. Stretching: To maximize a workout stretch before and after. Dynamic stretches before and static/dynamic stretches after are going to provide you with flexibility and strength in the long run, and ease tension later on in the day.

  3. Focus: Too many people are at the gym socializing, taking selfies, and doom scrolling. There are times to network and during a workout is not the time! Get off your phone, focus on the lifts, and the results will speak for themselves. This also reduces the amount of time spent working out and is more productive.

  4. Confidence is Key: The people around you are already focused on their own workouts so why care about what they might think? They don't know you or what your routine is, so walk in with your head held high. Everyone is there to reach their goals and so are you!

  5. Lift with Precision: By making each repetition count you not only maximize your results but you are doing your body a service. Is the weight too heavy? Reduce it. Can't do the workout correctly? Ask someone or come back to it later and substitute it for one similar.

Your goals and workout plan are entirely up to you. Prepare to make your journey one that is not rushed and done thoroughly. It's not a race to get everything completed and when done properly the results follow. Show up with a plan, execute it, focus on the lifts and workout, focus and maintain confidence, and maximize your potential while pushing yourself to your limits.

Wake up refreshed and revamp your daily routine.

  1. Sleep: When it comes to revamping your routine we all need it and how much you need is entirely up to you. Typically 6 to 8 hours is the "norm." Preferably 7 to 9 hours is even better while this is common for most. If you want the necessary Z's we all strive for, plan on getting into bed 30 minutes prior and early enough to get your target hours of sleep.

  2. Water: Our bodies are dehydrated as soon as we wake up! To feel refreshed and hydrated drink 1 to 2 glasses within the first 30 minutes of waking up. This will refresh and refuel the body starting the day off right.

  3. Stretches: Doing some stretches or light exercise before showering or heading out the door will get your body's endorphins up and positively impact your day.

  4. Have a Plan: Make a list of tasks the day before. Starting with the most difficult task first and then tackling the smaller tasks will motivate you to complete the rest of those for the day. This psychological effect on our minds releases dopamine, a neurological transmitter in the brain, also known as the "reward center" to motivate, improve mood, and more. The same effect you would feel after a workout.

  5. Don't Overwork Yourself: Hard work and discipline always pay off. Depending on your line of work, it's important to take into account taking a small mental break in between tasks. If you sit in front of a computer all day, work for 45 minutes, and take a 5-minute break. These intervals break up the workload, give your brain a moment to refresh, and continue with a clear mind.

No matter the day you may encounter, YOU come first. Always remember that for a healthier you and take on the day with full force!
